Live Christmas trees are a one of our family’s most treasured holiday traditions.  We gather at our favorite Christmas tree farm with family and friends, creating great memories and each finding their own perfect tree.  Before we bring those beloved trees into our homes, we keep in mind to make Christmas tree safety a part of the tradition as well.

Although not common, Christmas tree fires usually cause serious and costly damage. Whether you have a live or artificial tree, here are tips we all can use to prevent very preventable home fires related to Christmas trees this holiday season.

Choose a fresh tree.  Look for flexible, green needles and a trunk with sap.

Make sure your tree stand is sturdy. Is it stable enough to withstand being toppling over by children or pets?

Location! Location!  Keep your tree at least three feet away from fireplaces, candles, radiators, lamps and any other heat sources.

Water your tree daily. Always keep the base of the tree submerged.(Measure diameter of trunk; for every 1”, your stand should hold a quart of water.)

Don’t choke your electrical outlets.  Follow manufacturer’s instructions for the number of light strands you can safely connect, (usually a maximum of 3), then place cords along walls to prevent a tripping hazard. Never run them under rugs or carpets.

Not just any lights will do. Use low energy, indoor safe lighting that are approved by a national testing organization such as UL.  Don’t use damaged or frayed cords or loose connections.

Remember pets are curious. Be aware of decorations your pets may tug on or want to play with causing your tree to fall.

Shut off the lights. Never leave the lights on overnight and ALWAYS turn off or unplug them before leaving your home.

Don’t keep a dry tree around. Dispose of tree properly.  Don’t keep it in the garage or propped against the side of your home.

Artificial tree safety awareness. Artificial trees should be flame resistant and have a seal for an approved safety testing laboratory if the tree contains a built-in lighting set.

Death by artificial tree. Never use electric lights on an artificial tree as they can charge the tree and become an unexpected source of electrocution.

Check your smoke alarms.  Are they installed on every level of your home and working properly?  Especially inside and outside sleeping areas.

Keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Make sure everyone knows its location and how to use it.

Practice your family fire escape plan.  Review your plan with children.  If you don’t have one, make one now!
